April 17, 2011. Over the course of three days, as many as 241 tornadoes touched down in the southern U.S., leaving at least 45 dead and destroying hundreds of homes, including those in this Fayetteville, N.C., subdivision.

This week: An image from photographer Chris Hondros’ final assignment, taken on the day he was killed in Libya; wild fires in Mexico; the Gulf of Mexico, one year after the BP oil spill; Holy Week celebrations; and a cherry blossom tree blooming amid the devastation left by Japan’s tsunami.
